In the modern factory, participants have been trained in multiple disciplines.  To many individuals, TOC is another project to be undertaken while abandoning some of the others.  Long ago it was an MRP Crusade and the goal was singular.  Then Lean came on the scene and there was an instant conflict between camps – MRP versus Lean.  It took a while to settle that down and build systems both camps could live with.  Then 6 Sigma complicated life until the communities understood that Lean and 6 Sigma not only could coexist but were complimentary.  The Goal was written almost 40 years ago and most practitioners have not found a use for TOC in their supply chains.  This discussion will focus our thinking on the ways TOC can fit the modern supply chain and not only complement but enhance the solutions.  Lean may search for “Better, Faster, Cheaper” flow and 6 Sigma may fight variation but TOC provides the focus.  Join the discussion and see how this can be achieved.

How are constraints identified, how are conflicts resolved, how can one map “cause and effect”?  These are the starting points.  The objective is to define the current state and its constraints in order to develop ways to remove or mitigate the constraint.  How do these tactics contribute to Lean, 6 Sigma, and other tools?  

You should leave the meeting with a growing understanding of TOC tools and how to make them fit in whatever improvement focus your business has been using from MRP, Lean, 6 Sigma, or anything else.  The core concept is to understand that they are all complementary tools.  The more tools one has the better the chances of making significant and successful progress.

 About our Speaker: NICHOLAS M. TESTA, JR., CFPIM, CSCP, CLTD, CIRM, Jonah is the founder and CEO of Acuity Consulting, Inc. a firm specializing in supply chain and operations management and systems consulting and training. Acuity performs supply chain, Lean, process improvement, system implementation and business consulting. Business comes from repairing or improving existing enterprise and supply chain systems.


He served as 2006 President of APICS, the Association for Operations Management. Nick served 8 years on the APICS Board of Directors. He has also been the International Conference Chairman, President of the Orange County Chapter, Chairman of the Voice of the Customer Committee.

Nick Instructs at the college and graduate level and in the industry in technical and management subjects. He has spoken at many professional and management meetings and is an internationally known speaker. Nick holds a BS in Physics from the University of Santa Clara, MBA from the University of Southern California, APICS’s CFPIM, CSCP, CLTD, and CIRM, CSUF Certificate in Production and Inventory Control, and Goldratt Institute Jonah.

Although he began his career in aerospace, most of it has been in the commercial sector. His assignments in materials and operations positions included MRP, ERP, SCM, LEAN, CRM, data warehousing, business intelligence, and E-Commerce as well as operational and inventory problem-solving. He has worked for Becton Dickenson, Sargent Industries, Xerox Corporation, American Edwards Laboratories Division of American Hospital Supply Corporation, Newport Electronics Inc., and Checks in the Mail. He served as Vice President of Operations for some of these companies before entering consulting. He held senior positions in several consulting firms including Vice President and Business Unit Manager.
